A FARMER'S field, which is surrendering its ancient Roman secrets, is to be the site of a major dig.

Experts from Manchester universities archaeological unit and South Trafford archaeological group am bringing in specialist X-ray equipment to assist with the dig in autumn.

It follows more than two years work on the field, in Warburton, near LYMM, by 37-year-old amateur archaeologist James Balme.

The financial controller from nearby Rixton has unearthed rare finds, including coins which show the field was once the site of a large Roman settlement.
